LAURENS COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office is asking for public assistance in identifying a suspect accused of stealing multiple vehicles throughout the Upstate.

Deputies said Clinton Public Safety responded to a gas station on Musgrove Street in Clinton regarding a shirtless man attempting to steal gas. The suspect left the scene on foot and left behind a Lexus that was stolen out of Spartanburg County, deputies said.

“As I was coming up to the counter there was a guy looking back like something was happening outside," Ricky Thompson said, "That's when I looked and saw my car being backed out of the driveway, so I busted out the door and started yelling, hey, that's my car and he just started driving down the road!”

Clinton Police said Ricky Thompson's Lexus was found in the middle of the road with the drivers door still open and the keys inside.

According to the sheriff's office, the suspect then stole a 2012 Kia Sorento from a house on Musgrove Street.

Deputies said a Clinton Public Safety Officer pursued the vehicle down Highway 26 South and onto the interstate. Laurens County deputies said they entered the pursuit after the vehicle exited the interstate. The chase lasted for 25 minutes but was terminated after the suspect began driving erratically and putting other drivers in danger, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said the suspect stopped at the Brothers Fast Stop in Laurens, threw change on the counter for gas and immediately left.

According to deputies, the stolen Kia Sorento was stolen and recovered this morning on Sandy Drive in Honea Path. Deputies said shortly after the vehicle was recovered, a 2000 model Chrysler Town & Country van was stolen from the Affordable Tire and Automotive in Honea Path. The same suspect is believed to be responsible for the van theft, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said Anderson County deputies located the stolen van and pursued it, but the pursuit ended before the suspect could be apprehended.

Deputies said video of the suspect was obtained from the Brothers Fast Stop in Laurens. Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call the Laurens County Sheriff's Office at 864-984-4967 or Crime Stoppers at 68-CRIME.
