PENDLETON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Creative Inquiry class of Clemson University students are creating entrepreneurs out of La France Elementary School fifth-graders.

Clemson students are teaming up with nearly 60 La France Elementary School fifth-graders in Pendleton and teaching them the ins and outs of business. In doing so, the college students are teaching  these kids how to operate their own lemonade stand businesses.

On April 21st, these students will take their lemonade stand businesses to the streets of Pendleton.

Entrepreneurial Mentoring: Lemonade Day is spearheaded by Clemson Campus Recreation and the Clemson College of Business.

“Campus Recreation and the College of Business each put a strong emphasis on student engagement in the community, including service projects, so our collaboration fits the DNA of both campus entities,” said Donna Owen, assistant director of sponsorship and events for Campus Recreation. “Lemonade Day not only introduces the fifth-graders to starting a business, our students get exposure to a socio-economic group they normally don’t encounter.”

Owen said the Pendleton students' profit must cover their expenses, and a third must go to a charity before they decide how to spend the remainder any way they see fit. This exercise is supposed to teach each student empowerment and responsibility before anything else.

On Saturday, Clemson University mentors and La France fifth-graders will be setting up 31 lemonade stands at 9 a.m. around Pendleton and Anderson. Come out and support these local students succeed in their business plans.
