Coroner identifies man killed on I-26 E in Laurens Co.

NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

I-26 E in Laurens County was closed near mile marker 59 for about two hours Sunday afternoon following a fatal accident.

The closure was taking place at mile marker 59. Drivers were being rerouted onto US 76 in Joanna to SC Hwy 121 in Newberry.

Traffic on US Hwy 76 from Joanna to Newberry was extremely heavy.

Per troopers, two drivers were traveling east on I-26 E when they collided at approximately 2:15 p.m. The driver in the Chevy SUV was not injured. The driver in the Jeep Wrangler was ejected from the vehicle and fatally injured, troopers said. The vehicle overturned, they continued.

The coroner identified the victim as James Spires on Hinesville, Georgia. The coroner's office said Spires died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest. He was pronounced dead on scene.
