FRANKLIN, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Sheriff Robert Holland said an investigation is underway following a high speed that ended in an officer-involved shooting Monday night in Macon County.

The shooting happened on Sugar Fork Road.

During the chase, Holland said the suspect intentionally crashed into a Franklin police cruiser.

“No officers or civilians were injured and one suspect has been taken into custody,” Holland said. “The officer involved sought medical attention as a precautionary measure.”

Holland said the suspect may have consumed an unknown substance before the arrest and was taken to the hospital.

Holland said both he and Franklin police Chief David Adams were requested at the scene and they requested the NC State Bureau of Investigations to lead the investigation. The NC Highway Patrol will investigate the crash.

Adams later issued a news release stating that the incident began with a call about a suspicious man who did not pay for gas pumped at the N&N Express Mart on East main Street.

"The suspect had changed his clothing standing beside his truck, while throwing trash from his truck onto the ground and he filled the truck with gas without paying for same," Adams stated in the news release.

When an officer arrived and attempted to speak with the man, Adams said the suspect sped off.

A chase ensued and eventually seemed to stop on Sugar Fork Road.

As the chasing officer got out of his car, Adams said the suspect intentionally backed up and rammed the patrol car. The officer retaliated by opening fire and the suspect again sped off.

The driver eventually stopped and was arrested.

Adams identified the suspect as Joseph Cyphers, 28.

Cyphers was charged with felony speed to elude arrest, 3 counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, careless and reckless driving and no operators license.
