Voluntary evacuations ordered at campground after flood warning issued in McDowell County

MARION, NC (FOX Carolina) -

McDowell County Emergency Management on Tuesday issued a voluntary evacuation order for the Riverbreeze Campground in Marion due to flood concerns.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the county until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials said emergency managers and first responders were staged along the Catawba River monitoring flood waters.

Anyone staying at the Riverbreeze Campground of US 221 Business has been asked to leave until further notice.

Campers needing a place to shelter can go to the McDowell County Senior Center on Spaulding Road in Marion.

Officials say any drivers who encounter flooded should “turn around, don’t drown.”

The National Weather Service said some locations that will experience flooding include Marion, Glen Alpine, Old Fort, Lake James State Park, Lake James, Nebo, Pleasant Gardens, Oak Hill, Morganton and Lake Rhodhiss.
