MARION, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in McDowell County have arrested a man accused of putting a dog in a bag and drowning it in the Catawba River.

Deputies said Charles Travis Hollifield, 40, of Hankins Road in Marion was charged with felony cruelty to animals.
Deputies began investigating on March 28 after two fishermen found a pink camouflage drawstring bag floating in the water near the Yancey Bridge.

The carcass of a chihuahua named Princess was inside.

An investigation led them to Hollified, “who is acquainted by marriage” with the dog’s owner, per a news release.

Deputies said Hollifield drowned Princess by placing her in the drawstring bag, along with a rock, and throwing the bag in the river.
