5 former SCDC employees from the Upstate among the 14 indicted on federal charges

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

U.S. Attorney Beth Drake announced the indictment and arrest of 14 former employees of the South Carolina Department of Corrections. 

On Wednesday, the former employees were indicted on federal charges related to accepting bribes and bringing contraband into prisons across South Carolina. 

Drake said the charges include: Use of interstate facilities to facilitate bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud depriving South Carolina of the right to honest services and possession with intent to distribute narcotics. 

The following people were charged:

  • Rachel Burgess, 29, Columbia 
  • Joshua Cave, 29, Aiken
  • Jamal Early, 23, Beaufort 
  • James Harvey, 54, Greenwood 
  • Douglas Hawkins, 29, Columbia 
  • Robert Hill, 53, Spartanburg 
  • Sharon Johnson-Breeland, 29, Columbia 
  • Darnell Kleckley, 33, Charleston
  • Holly Mitchem, 37, Spartanburg 
  • Frank Pridgeon, 64, Rock Hill
  • Catherine Prosser, 60,Greenwood
  • Camille Williams, 65, Aiken 
  • Miguel Williams, 41, Anderson
  • Shatara Wilson, 29, Columbia 

According to Drake, the FBI and state law enforcement have been investigating the smuggling of contraband into prisons by SCDC staff since 2016. Drake said the investigation has found several SCDC employees who accepted bribes to smuggle cell phones, narcotics or tobacco into prisons.
