GPD increasing patrols downtown after two armed robberies

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Daniel Morales chooses to park his food truck at Falls Park in downtown Greenville because of the foot traffic, but also because he feels safe while he and his wife serve food.

"We had a cop that actually came by,” said Morales. “Thomas was his name, he loved the truck and he was friendly. There's always cops always walking around. My wife and I are here all the time and know it's a safe place to be."

According to Greenville Police, around 10 P.M. Tuesday night, it wasn’t so safe as two men were involved with at least two armed robberies downtown.

The first one happened just after 10 p.m. near the Peace Center. Police say a young woman was walking with two friends when they encountered the men. The woman offered the suspects flowers, but the men pulled out a gun and demanded money. The suspects didn’t get any from the group and ran off.

Captain Marty Wilkes with the Greenville Police Department said investigators are looking through footage on city’s security cameras and cameras from businesses.

“Hopefully help us identify these people responsible,” said Captain Wilkes.

Investigators say shortly after that time, the two men robbed a couple at the bottom of the Falls Park. The suspects took their cellphones, cash and debit card.

"We're going to do everything as a police department to make sure safety is preserved,” said Captain Wilkes.

Due to the crimes, the Greenville Police Department will be stepping up patrols in the area until the suspects are caught.

Morales says they’re uncharacteristic crimes for downtown and he says people should still feel safe.

"I will come here as much as we can with my two daughters, dogs and my whole family,” said Morales.
