MCDOWELL, NC (FOX Carolina) -

McDowell County Sheriff Dudley Greene has announced his resignation and retirement.

His resignation will be effective beginning May 31.

Sheriff Greene gave official notice of his resignation to the McDowell County Board of Commissioners last week:

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the citizens of McDowell County, and I appreciate all that the members of the Board and Staff have done-individually and collectively- to support our office in its mission and myself personally during my tenure. Our county is indeed fortunate to have the strong leadership you provide, and I feel fortunate to count you each as a friend."

Greene was first elected sheriff in 2010.
