SPARTANBURG COUNTY (FOX Carolina) -

Basketball fans and coaches waited for months for high school basketball star Zion Williamson to announce where he would play college basketball. On Thursday, April 26, he made it official and signed his letter of intent and committed to Duke University.

"Two, or three weeks after graduation, I'm headed off to Durham," Williamson said.

He signed the letter of intent at Spartanburg Day School where he turned the gym into a YouTube staple with his daring dunks and high-caliber ball skills.

"They all just treat me like a normal kid and that's what I"m going to miss the most about them," Williamson said.

Even though he's looking forward to the next level, parting ways with his teammates will be tough.

"Knowing that we won't be going to the same school next year hasn't hit us yet," he said.

Williamson, who is soon to be out of cast that protects his thumb he hurt during the McDonald's All-American game wants to be physically and mentally ready for college and the court.

"When I go to school during the summer it's a lot of weight lifting, summer work outs, also summer school," Williamson said."It's a whole degree of competition out there."

Like many times before, Williamson's parents, coaches, and classmates cheered him on during the signing.

He said he doesn't mind the responsibility that comes with all the recognition.

"It's just great to know that I'm a role model to little ones," Williamson said.
