The owner of an innovative flip flop company based in the Upstate is taking steps to makes sure his products are manufactured as sustainably as possible.

FOX Carolina visited the Cooks Flips workshop in Travelers Rest to learn more.

Inside an old dairy barn, John Walker has made a thousand pairs of flip flops with this own two hands, but his next product shipment will come from Mexico, where he’s been working closely with factories that can create his products in the most environmentally friendly way.

Walker says, “They take all their leather shavings and scraps and grind them up to create this really hard substraight right here that’s a lot like plywood but it’s made of recycled leather. This shoe is super sustainable.”

He says it’s super comfortable too. The shoes are designed with a longer toe thong and shorter straps to decrease the amount of “flop” and provide a tight and secure fit.

Most of the sales of Cooks Flips are happening online but you may have seen the brand at a few local retailers. Walker’s goal is to open a Cooks Custom-Fit Shop where straps will be adjusted to individually fit each customer’s foot.
