PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunny Lane in Pickens County Saturday evening.

Deputies said they received reports that a shooting had occurred in front of a residence on Sunny Lane around 7:55 p.m. They arrived on scene in approximately 11 minutes and located an adult female who was deceased in the driveway of the residence on the 100 block.

Deputies said the victim had what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. They said multiple 9mm caliber shell casings were also found near the victim and a.9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.

They said, 58-year-old Paul Scott Bennett of Sunny Lane was taken into custody and booked into the Pickens County Detention Center sometime between 11 and 11:45 p.m.

Bennett was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. On Sunday, he was denied bond on both charges.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Robin Jeanette Smith of Sunny Lane, per the coroner. She lived next door to the address where she was found deceased, the coroner confirmed.

Smith was pronounced deceased on scene. An autopsy will be performed.

Deputies say the incident stemmed from a verbal confrontation that started earlier Saturday afternoon. They said, Bennett called deputies at approximately 4:30 p.m. and stated that he had been personally shot at by trespassers on his property. When deputies arrived, Bennett recanted and said no one had been on his property and that he heard gunshots in the distance by an unknown party.

After further investigation, deputies say they do not believe any other person fired shots during the fatal encounter. The only weapon encountered was a .9mm handgun, which detectives have reason to believe was brought to the encounter by Bennett.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

A memorial service for Smith will be held on May 12 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home.

According to her obituary, she loved motorcycles, hiking and her dog Ratchet. She is survived by two sons.

A GoFundMe has been set up for her family. Click here to contribute.
