Scrap yard fire sends huge plume of smoke over Anderson

ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters were battling a large scrap yard fire in Anderson on Tuesday.

The Anderson City Fire Department said crews were called to the CMC Recycling facility, formerly OmniSource scrap yard, on North Gossett Street.

The fire was putting off a large amount of smoke and firefighters were using the engine ladder to hit the flames.

Travis Poore with Anderson City Fire said the fire started while workers were compacting the scrap pile. It was accidental and no injuries have been reported.

Homeland Park Fire Department is assisting at the scene. DHEC and Duke Energy are also responding.

Poore estimated crews would be on scene for several hours.
