SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg Science Center’s most famous resident has been found.

Jennifer Hoy, the SSC’s Executive Director, said the center’s African Sulcata Tortoise went missing Thursday morning.

The tortoise, Imhotep, disappeared from a yard in the Park Hills community.

“Many of our animals are getting too large for their enclosures, and Imhotep is one of them,” Hoy said. “Our biologist, Peter Lembcke, actually takes the tortoise to make home visits so he can get some exercise.”

During Thursday morning’s home visit, Imhotep tore down a portion of a fence and escaped.

“He’s basically a rambunctious teenager,” Hoy said.
