ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Anderson District One confirmed that a school board member resigned on Wednesday night amid controversy over the retirement of a popular teacher.

Palmetto High School algebra teacher Lisa Houston voluntarily resigned after a Snapchat video surfaced that depicted her standing on a sleeping student's desk. Houston appears to make physical contact with the student using her hand and foot, however her attorney said the video does not capture the whole story.

Many came to Houston's defense, saying she has an unblemished 27-year record as a teacher and that she often goofs around to connect with students.

Officials confirmed Dr. Doug Atkins resigned from the Board of Trustees on Wednesday in relation to Houston leaving the school.

According to Atkins' biography on the district website, he was appointed assistant principal of Palmetto High School in 1988 and later served as principal in 1990.
