Police: Man in custody after high-speed chase reached speeds of 120 mph

MAGGIE VALLEY, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Maggie Valley Police Department says one person has been taken into custody after a 10-mile, high-speed chase. 

Officers said the chase began on Highway 19 in Maggie Valley and ended in Waynesville. 

The chase began during a traffic stop, officers said.  Officer said the suspect reached speeds of up to 120 miles per hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone.

Near the end of the pursuit, the suspect crashed into another vehicle although police said there were no injuries. After the crash, officers said he tried to continue fleeing but was apprehended. 

The suspect was identified as John Stephen Murray. He is charged by Maggie Valley Police with two counts of resist obstruct and delay of an officer, felony flee to elude, reckless to endanger, driving without insurance and damage to property.

Charges are also pending from Waynesville Police Department.

Murray is currently in custody at the Haywood County Detention Center.
