The Laurens County Coroner's Office says a man has died after being struck by a train in Joanna.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Sumter Street and Taylor Street.

Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek identified the victim as 58-year-old Earl Wright of Joanna.

Wright was pronounced dead on scene, Cheek said.

An autopsy will be performed at a later date.

A CSX spokesperson issued the following statement on the incident:

“At approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5th, a northbound CSX train struck and fatally injured a person on the railroad tracks in Joanna, SC. This occurred approximately 100 feet from Calhoun Street, which is the closest public grade crossing. At this time, it is not clear why this person was on the tracks, but CSX is cooperating with local authorities who are investigating. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this event.”
