PIEDMONT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a woman has been arrested after a deputy was injured during a dog attack in Piedmont Saturday evening.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to a home on Sloan Avenue  in Piedmont around 6 p.m. in reference to a domestic disturbance.

When the responding deputy arrived on scene, he observed three large dogs at the door and asked the woman at the scene to secure the animals.

Neighbor, Jamarus Smith witnessed the attack.

""Oh yeah they were barking and all when they were running up. Like ready to attack him," explained Smith.

Deputies said the suspect then purposely let the dogs out of the house and the three boxers immediately attacked the deputy.

The deputy was bitten multiple times by the dogs, and was able to discharge his firearm, striking one of the dogs.

That dog was taken to the animal hospital for treatment.

Animal Control responded and was able to secure a second dog, but the third dog ran off.

The sheriff's office said the injured deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The injured deputy received multiple stitches and was treated for bites to the arm and lower extremities.

On Monday, the sheriff's office said the deputy was home from the hospital and recovering.

The original complaints deputies were called out to investigate was determined to be unfounded.

Deputies said Shona Thompson was arrested and charged with assault and battery second degree. She was being held at the Greenville County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond Monday.
