GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A photo shared by the Center for Disease Control on Twitter might make your stomach turn - but it's an important reminder for the beginning of tick season.

The CDC shared a photograph of a muffin, saying ticks can be as small as the size of a poppy seed. They asked Twitter users if they could spot all five ticks in the photo.

The photo drew a large number of reactions on social media, with many users saying it has forever ruined poppy seed muffins for them. However, despite the itchy feeling you may get looking at the picture, it demonstrates how ticks can easily go unseen.

"We want people to know that the ticks that are most responsible for biting people and transmitting the bacteria that cause Lyme disease are small—the size of a poppy seed," a CDC spokesperson said. "This is why daily tick checks are so important during the warm months."

The CDC later issued a tongue-in-cheek apology for the tweet, saying they were sorry it "ticked" people off.

Officials said thousands of Americans will get sick from tick bites this tick season.

The CDC shared the following tick prevention tips:

  • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents with one of the active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, 2-undecanone.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
  • Treat items, such as boots, pants, socks, and tents, with permethrin or buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear.
  • Shower soon after coming indoors
  • Find and remove ticks immediately
  • Also protect your pets from ticks and fleas
