GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

As Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis faces misconduct in office and obstruction of justice charges, Sheriff Johnny Mack Brown is now the interim top cop who met with Greenville County Council members on Tuesday.

Council wanted to hear his assessment on where the Sheriff's Office now stands.

"We've got to make sure that we have the tools to continue to do the job," Brown said.

He says the area where dispatchers answer calls needs work and he needs to hire deputies and provide CIT, which is Crisis Intervention Training for all deputies and dispatchers

"It's an issue we've got to face," Brown said.

It's an issue that bubbled up during a deadly officer-involved Jermaine Massey shooting, a man who called dispatchers for help and told them he was bipolar.

Brown says once SLED completes its investigation he wants to show transparency.

"I intend to release that tape and let everybody see what happened," Brown said

Some council members say that transparency should include how budget money is spent.

"If they want to know where the money is being spent, all they have to do is ask," Brown said.

Lynn Ballard, who represents District 26, says he serves a large area and is concerned about response times.

"What I heard the sheriff say is 'I'm here to cooperate, I'm here to work with you'," Ballard said. "Anytime we can cut down on response time, it would be good for everybody."

Brown is also reviewing why there is a full-time SWAT team.

"Sometimes you escalate if you go in there with your SWAT truck and all your equipment- you fuse the situation instead of defusing it," Brown said.

It's now all under review as the new top cop works to rebuild a relationship with council.
