Plan to build Burger King in the West End brings concerns to the community

Posted: Updated:

There's a new plan to build a Burger King on the corner of Pendleton and Academy Street in Greenville.

In a meeting held on Tuesday, the West End Neighborhood Association raised many questions for the company on how their plans will impact the community.

Those who live in the West End say they have been trying to develop the area so it is enjoyable for the residents, but after the meeting it was clear not all agree a Burger King is the best fit.

The proposal to put a Burger King in the vacant lot off of Academy Street certainly left some having it their way, like Inez Morris who says, "We don't have any fast food restaurants in the west Greenville area and so I think that gives an opportunity for Burger King to come in and also provide jobs and the opportunity for growth for people in the community."

For others it puts a bad taste in their mouths.

Jalen Elrod has lived in the West End his whole life and wants more.

Elrod tells us, "He can be hiring people from the community and that is true but if you are going to pay them a wage that is as low as he said it would then that's not going to help with the community prosperity."

Many spoke out about traffic concerns at the intersection near the proposed Burger King saying it's not ideal, but others say it is just a minor problem.

Morris explains, "I don't think we are going to solve a traffic problem by not putting a Burger King in West Greenville."

The restaurant plans to operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, but could stay open as late as 2 a.m. on weekends. That worries many about a late night crowd, and some residents are concerned about serving up fast food in the west end.

"Burger king does not provide healthy food options and lower income communities are more enabled to suffer from obesity and putting a fast food restaurant here would just contribute to that", Elrod says.

However, when asked what they would like to see in the spot where a bank used to sit everyone in the room had the same end goal, Elrod explains, "We would like to see something like a grocery store if that is feasible and get more land, a smaller community center or again just something that benefits and helps the community and help them prosper."

Officials with Burger King told us they could have the building up 100 days after it is approved, and their plan as of right now is to have it finished this year.

There will be a planning commission meeting on May 17th to further discuss moving forward with this proposal.
