Summer heat returns, along with PM storms

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The heat cranks up through the end of the week, and rain chances will increase as well. The best chance for showers and storms will come Thursday afternoon and evening.

This morning starts out mild with early temperatures around 61 in the Upstate and 57 in the mountains with partly cloudy skies. The day becomes hotter than previous days with highs at 88 in the Upstate and 80 for the mountains.

Showers and storms will develop in the mountains after noon, then slide into the Upstate by 3-6PM.

A "marginal" risk for severe weather is listed for our mountains and northern Upstate counties today. That's the lowest on the risk scale but, where storms develop it'll be possible to see frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and some small hail.

Friday looks drier, and HOTTER! Highs will warm to 82-90 area-wide! While a small chance for a pop-up shower comes in the afternoon, most areas will stick with a partly cloudy sky.

The overall dry and hot weather will linger into the weekend, and humidity will increase as well. This could put heat index values into the mid 90s for southern Upstate spots.

Rain chances increase next week with highs returning to the 80s.
