GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A search warrant released on Thursday revealed that SLED agents found cameras and recording devices in their investigation at the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

After suspended Sheriff Will Lewis was indicted on charges of misconduct and obstruction of justice, agents conducted searches of his office and agency-issued vehicle. Items found include an RF detector in Lewis' office, hidden cameras in smoke detectors in other department offices, and two clocks with recording devices in Lewis' vehicle, the warrant states.

According to the documents, employees told investigators Lewis had previously told them, "just remember things are always recorded." Other employees expressed concern that Lewis had been surreptitiously recording them.

Agents said one employee told them in a conversation with Lewis, he told her "if people were going to continue running their mouths they were going to find themselves in a precarious situation." The conversation reportedly occurred in January 2018, before Lewis was indicted but after a sexual harassment lawsuit was filed against him.

In an interview with a financial officer for the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, investigators said she told them in addition to his agency-issued laptop, an HP Envy laptop was purchased for Lewis.

According to the warrant, the official "informed agents that Sheriff Lewis instructed him to leave the HP Envy laptop in the box and not to tag it or hook it up to anything on the GCSO network."

Agents said the official told them that Lewis said he intended to use the second laptop for "personal notes." Investigators said in the warrant that there is probably cause to believe Lewis had "illegally obtained communication with his subordinates" on the laptop.

SLED said Lewis did not disclose the existence of the laptop and failed to turn it in when he was instructed to do so.

In an effort to locate the laptop, SLED executed a search warrant at Lewis' house and seized the following items:

  • HP laptop
  • MacBook pro laptop
  • Multiple jump drives
  • memory stick
  • USB card
  • Sony camera
  • Sony digital recorder
  • Asus tablet
  • iPhone
  • Multiple LG phones
  • Multiple Dell laptops
  • Multiple Sony computers
  • Dell chromebook
  • iPad
  • VHS tapes
  • CDs
