CHEROKEE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The coroner is investigating the death of an inmate in Cherokee County.

Coroner Dennis Fowler told FOX Carolina 35-year-old Richard Jermaine Lindsay was arrested Tuesday night before 10 p.m. on a DUI charge.

Fowler said Lindsay was taken to a holding cell at Cherokee County Detention Center, but was later found unresponsive after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers performed CPR and called paramedics before Lindsay was taken to Mary Black Hospital and revived.

Lindsay was then airlifted to Spartanburg Regional for treatment, where he was pronounced brain dead Thursday morning after 4 a.m., said Fowler. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
