ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Asheville Police Department said the State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting on Friday.

Police said they responded to the In Town Motor Lodge on 100 Tunnel Road in reference to an individual yelling aggressively and damaging property.

According to the police department, the officer tried to start a dialogue with the suspect through a closed door, but the suspect continued to behave aggressively.

The suspect then came out through a rear door and attacked the officer with an edged weapon, Asheville Police said. The officer shot the suspect following a struggle, police stated.

The suspect was transported to Mission Hospital with critical injuries.

Police said the officer was treated for injuries sustained in the struggle with the suspect.

The suspect was identified as Jonathan Alan Bedrosian. Police said he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and assault on a government official with a deadly weapon.

The North Carolina SBI is investigating the shooting.

Asheville Police said the officer involved was placed on investigative suspension, per the department's Use of Force policy.

Asheville police said Tuesday that Bedrosian was still being treated at the hospital in stable condition.
