ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A fire on Monday in Anderson County consumed multiple boats and a dock as it ripped through a Lake Hartwell marina.

An employee of Portman Marina said the fire started on Dock 6 while someone was working on a boat. Investigators believe a generator backfired, starting the fire which then spread to other boats.

Coroner Greg Shore, whose boat was one of the ones that caught fire, said dozens of boats were on fire in the marina.

Shore said one person was injured in the fire and transported to Augusta Burn Center.

Anderson County Emergency Management said they issued an all-call to any available firefighters asking for assistance at the scene. A total of 28 agencies responded to the scene with more than 200 firefighters and the Red Cross assisting.

Boats that were on fire are being pulled away from the dock, emergency officials said.

Adam Medicus, an Upstate man who moved a boat with his father just minutes before the fire broke out, said the scene was, "just chaos." He shared footage of smoke pouring out of the marina as the fire spread from boat to boat.

"Thankfully there was only one person who got hurt," Medicus said. "It could have been a lot worse."

At least 11 boats are completely destroyed or missing after the fire, officials said, and many more suffered "significant damage."

Dock 6 at Portman Marina was still closed Tuesday as investigators and boat owners returned to the scene.

An investigator with the Department of Natural Resources said their investigation into the incident determined the fire was accidental. They said it was caused by a generator backfire.

No charges will be filed.

A tow boat operator said his company would begin removing any sunken boats that DHEC determines pose environmental concerns.
