National Police Week runs through Saturday May 19th so it may be a good time to show law enforcement officers some extra appreciation. FOX Carolina caught up with a School Resource Officer at Hillcrest High School to learn more about the role of an SRO.

School Resource Officer Morris Madden has been in law enforcement for 23 years and the last 14 of those years have been at Hillcrest High School. He says his typical day begins with greeting the students as they arrive to school. Then he secures entryways and is prepared to respond to anything that may arise on campus.

On Monday, he was asked by a teacher to address her students as part of National Police Week. He says once kids understand what police officers do, they’re going to have a better experience interacting with officers on the street. He says it’s important to connect with kids so they understand the role of police officers.

He says, “With it being police appreciation week, it’s good we have that in this country because sometimes we’re looked upon as being the bad guys and we’re not. We’re the good guys. We’re here to protect you. We’re here to uphold your rights, keep you safe and stand between you and the bad guys.”

To maintain positive relationships between officers and kids throughout the year, the City of Simpsonville and the Simpsonville Police Department have organized a summer youth camp for kids between 13 and 16 years old. The two week camp begins on July 16. Participants will learn about various law enforcement topics and they’ll tour SLED and detention centers while building leadership skills.
