Deputies identify kayaker killed in accident on French Broad River

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a death after authorities were called to an overturned kayak in the French Broad River.

Dispatchers said a call about an unresponsive kayaker came in around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday from Ledges River Park in Asheville. The kayak overturned in an area of the river with rapids and crews were having difficulty reaching the kayak, dispatchers said.

The Buncombe County Urban Search and Rescue Team had boats in the water.

Deputies said the accident results in the death of a male victim. He was identified as 56-year-old Delmer Melvin Garratt of Lakeland, Florida.

Asheville Fire and Rescue, Reems Creek Fire, French Broad Volunteer Fire and Weaverville Fire are on scene assisting with recovery efforts.

The incident remains under investigation.
