GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Tyler Shelley, an Upstate boy facing a tough battle, turned 13 years old on Thursday.

Tyler's family posted a Facebook update on Monday saying they had been in and out of the hospital as he battled pain and an infection.

Shelley was previously diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, a rare life-threatening genetic disorder. There is no treatment or cure for mitochondrial disease, and over the last year, Tyler has battled complications that have led to hospitalizations.

To celebrate his birthday, his family asked for the community to send him happy birthday messages through the Greenville Health System e-greetings system.
