DNR investigating after thousands of fish found dead in Spartanburg County

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is investigating a large fish kill in they Upstate officials were notified about on Friday.

A DNR spokesperson said thousands of fish were found dead at Mud Creek and Lake Bowen in Spartanburg. The number of fish killed is in the thousands and they are different kinds, he said.

DNR is investigating with the help of the Department of Health and Environmental Control. 

The spokesperson said the lake was treated for algae earlier in the week. DHEC said it was determined that the fish kill was related to the application of an algicide.

The Department of Pesticide Regulation at Clemson University has been notified.
