Here is the full statement:

GREENVILLE, S.C. Greenville Students Demand Action are saddened by the tragic shooting in Santa Fe, Tx. on Friday. Once again, a school community has been rocked by gun violence. We do not deserve to live like this, and we do not deserve to die like this. We are devastated for the Santa Fe community and for the families whose worse fear became a reality. These families join a club that no one wants to join - the club thousands of Americans - living everywhere from big cities to small towns whose lives have been forever changed by gun violence.

We believe the refusal of our lawmakers to enact gun sense legislation has allowed another mass shooting. We are outraged by the lack of action from too many lawmakers who have done nothing to stop this gun violence crisis. Our elected leaders have had more than enough time to take action. If they do not have the courage to lead, we will throw them out of office - and replace them with people who do.

Every day, 96 Americans are shot and killed and hundred more wounded. Gun violence might make the news after a tragedy like this, but it traumatizes American communities every day in this country, including children and teens. Every day, more than 7 children and teens die from gun violence, adding up to 2,700 a year. Black children are disproportionately affected. Black children and teens are 14 times more likely than white children and teens to die by gun homicide.

A vigil will be held on Sunday, May 20 to honor the lives lost in Santa Fe and call our leaders to action. The vigil will begin at 7 PM in Falls Park.

We deserve to live free from gun violence - our homes, schools, and communities should be safe. We refuse to accept shootings in schools as normal. We students have grown up in a generation of mass shootings where news like today has become normalized. We all have a role in this national crisis. You can text STUDENTS to 644-33 to join other students working to prevent gun violence in your community.
