Deputies say 'the Travelers' could be back in Greenwood Co.

GREENWOOD COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenwood Co. Sheriff's Office was alerted that the Travelers may be back in Greenwood Co. attempting to scam again. 

The Travelers are a known group of scam artists, according to deputies. Deputies say to lookout for scams they are known for, which include: painting driveway/ barns, imposter burglaries, which are seen as; a person being lured outside in attempt for them to enter your residence to take your valuables (one of them is usually impersonating a rug or carpet salesman). 

Here are some other scam tactics they may use, per deputies: 

• Asking for directions
• Acting as if they are ill and need assistance or water
• Asking to use the telephone
• Asking if your home is for sale
• Inquiring about neighbors
• Asking about property line

Deputies say, here are the reasons that the scammer’s target the elderly:

• They are usually home during the day
• They are often alone
• They grew up in an era of less crime and are usually more trusting
• Most times the victim is not able to remember the descriptions to identify them

If anyone has any contact with a person/ persons attempting any of these scams, or any other scam, deputies alert you to not open the door and call 911.
