DUNCAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The pictures from the ICU just tell the beginning of a story. A mother holding her daughter's hand, praying for a miracle, for more time.

"You try so hard to stay positive and never lose hope but in that moment when you see your child so banged up and just all different colors that your child never should be, you can't help but brace yourself for what might be coming," said Mystina Vogel.

Those chilling moments made her homecoming 30 days later that much sweeter.

"I love you too,” said Madie Gervasi to her mother.

For days the words "I love you" were one sided as Gervasi laid in a coma, in critical condition after a crash. Her car burst into flames while she was trapped inside.

"It’s pretty scary knowing that I survived all that and the fire," said Gervasi.

At first, she was hanging on by a thread.

"I couldn't feel,” Vogel said. “I was too afraid to feel anything."

Days turned into nights, which quickly became weeks. It was a blur for Gervasi, but she said she hung on, fighting against the odds through a traumatic brain injury.

"I looked at photos and it helped me remember, but at first I didn't remember two weeks before my wreck,” Gervasi said. “I don't remember my wreck happening, I don't remember about two weeks after, so it's all kind of just blurry for me. I only know what I've been told."

That's why the thought of her being at home next to her family so soon was unimaginable for even doctors. Gervasi said she pushed through physical therapy, getting stronger every day.

"I'm definitely going to be walking again by the time school starts," said the high school junior.

Head strong. One month after the wreck, she had 21 broken bones, a foot-long scar from emergency surgery and memory loss, but she got to go home.

"The fear was just overwhelming,” Vogel remembers. “At that moment, I never thought we'd be having this moment right now."

One day at a time, that's Vogel's focus, but Gervasi is not looking to slow down. She's ready to get back to being a teenager.

"I'll be back to it soon, I know I will be,” said the teen. “I'm already thinking about next summer softball. Senior year's gotta be lit."
