ROSMAN, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said a man was arrested Monday and charged in the death of a four-year-old child.

Mahoney said Keyshawn Trekell Smith, 21, of Brevard, was charged with felony child abuse and first degree murder.

Mahoney said the victim, Keegan Gage Bland, died on May 5 at the hospital.

Deputies began investigating on the morning of May 4 when Mahoney said they were called to the Kantor Village Mobile Home Park on Old Rosman Highway in Rosman about a child who had reportedly fallen out on a window.

Smith, who Mahoney said is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was watching the child at the time.

“The victim’s injuries did not appear to be consistent with the reported incident and further investigation was needed,” Mahoney said.

That investigation led to Smith’s arrest.

Mahoney said no further details can be released at this time.

Smith is being held in the Transylvania County Detention Center under no bond.
