As summer approaches, law enforcement officers are reminding South Carolina residents of the state's updated golf cart laws.

Greenville Police said children under the age of 16 account for one-third of all golf cart injuries in the nation.

Here are some important laws to note before you take the golf cart out this summer:

  • You must be at least 16-years-old to operate a golf cart.
  • Golf carts can only be driven during daylight hours
  • Owners need a permit from the DMV in order to drive the cart on public roads
  • Drivers must have registration, liability insurance, and a driver's license on them while operating the golf cart

Law enforcement officers emphasized that it is illegal to drink alcohol on a golf cart. You can still be charged with DUI or open container while operating a golf cart.

"Our enforcement of golf carts laws is designed to promote the safe operation of golf carts and prevent injuries," Greenville PD said.
