GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a child was transported to the hospital after a dog attack on Thursday.

Deputies were called to Thompson Drive in the afternoon after they said the boy was attacked by a pit bull while getting off the bus.

The child was transported to the hospital with injuries to his leg but is expected to be OK, deputies said.

Bob Mihalic, a spokesman for Greenville County, said Friday that the dog's owner was cited for letting the animal roam freely and for not having a rabies tag.

Mihalic said the dog was still in the owner's custody. Animal Control was waiting to learn the severity of the child's injuries before making a determination on whether or not to seize the animal.

A GoFundMe has been set up for the child's medical expenses. Click here to donate.
