OCONEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It was fate Jesse found his way into John and Linda Roose's life.

"I put my hand on top of the cage and I got a kiss from him and thought that was a good sign,” explained John.

For the last 5 years, the high school sweethearts have loved him like their own son. They turned an abused animal into a happy and playful pup.

Monday night, John and Linda were on their way home from a friend’s house, with Jesse in the backseat, when they were involved in an accident with a Jeep.

"The next thing I know,” said John, “I was in an ambulance on the way to Greenville."

71-year-old Linda died at the hospital. Their beloved dog, Jesse ran away from the scene of the crash. John was just released from the hospital. Since the accident, his son Tim, along with volunteers have searched for Jesse.

"We've contacted the different animal controls,” said Tim Roose, “The shelters and vets around. We've put flyers up."

There have been sightings of Jesse in the area, but so far no one has been able to get close enough. John says he’s grateful for all the help during such a heartbreaking time.

"He certainly would be a big comfort to me right now because with my wife gone,” said John, “He's part of the family that would help me."

Anyone that spots Jesse is urged to contact their local animal control. There is a reward for Jesse’s safe return home.
