GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Raising awareness and demanding action - that's what students of all ages spoke out about during a demonstration on Thursday.

Students demanded action honored the victims of the Santa Fe, Texas school shooting, highlighting the importance of safety in schools across the country. They said they fear this shooting won't be the last.

"I just got out of my AP exam, and I got in the car and my mom said 'There's been another one' and I knew exactly what she was talking about," Greenville High Sophomore Caroline Avenger said.

Avenger said she knew without even asking, that her mother was referring to a school shooting.

"There are a plethora of legislative items that we would really like to see," said Avenger. "The most commonly talked about are universal background checks, ending the sale of bump stocks."

State Representative Garry Smith said the focus should be on what resources we can put into schools to keep students safe.

That conversation has been going on across the Upstate, including one sheriff's proposal to have armed staff in schools. The school board opted instead to increase the number of school resource officers.

More importantly, even without knowing the fallen students and teachers, they recognized the victims' lives and how they were killed.
