A beloved Upstate teacher is returning to her high school after Anderson School District One said they have reached a resolution following a Snapchat video controversy.

Lisa Houston, an algebra teacher at Palmetto High School, resigned after video circulated on social media showing her standing on a sleeping student's desk and pushing him with her hands and foot.

After the video was released, however, police said the student involved and his father told investigators they did not believe the actions were done in a mean-spirited fashion. Many defended Houston, saying her unconventional teaching methods are part of how she has built a strong rapport with students.

Students organized marches from the school to the district office with signs supporting Houston and calling for her to return to teaching.

The school board voted on May 9 to see if a "compromise could be reached" with Houston.

On Friday, the district issued a statement saying Houston would return to teaching at Palmetto High School in the fall. The district said it believes Houston's actions "bore no ill intent" and recognized her longstanding career.

Read the full joint statement released by the district and Houston below:

The Anderson School District One Board of Trustees and administration are pleased to have Ms. Houston return to her teaching position at Palmetto High School in the fall. Ms. Houston acknowledges that the video, when viewed without audio and the benefit of context, could be misconstrued; however, her actions were meant to be a light-hearted exchange with a student with whom she had an excellent relationship. The District believes that Ms. Houston’s actions toward the student bore no ill intent and recognizes that Ms. Houston has had a long standing, distinguished teaching career with the District. Both the District and Ms. Houston respect and value the student involved in this matter and his family and appreciate the manner in which they have responded to this situation. The District appreciates Ms. Houston’s cooperation in reaching this resolution. Ms. Houston appreciates the support of the Board and administration in working through the issues and resolving them constructively. Both the District and Ms. Houston are happy with this outcome and look forward to a smooth ending to the school year that will allow Palmetto High School students to remain the proper focus.
