Polk Co. officials announce road closures after storm, voluntary evacuations

POLK COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Polk County Officials recommended a voluntary evacuation in specific areas ahead of tropical storm conditions. 

Officials had residents evacuate the areas by 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Polk County listed the following areas as a heightened concern: 

  • Highway 176 from North Wall Road to 3910 Highway 176 
  • Warrior Drive from Baker Drive to Meadowlark Drive 
  • Meadowlark Drive and intersecting roads 
  • Walcot Farm Lane 
  • Miller Mountain Road 
  • Rixhaven Subdivision 
  • Green River Cove Road 
  • Holbert Cove Road
  • Page Farm Road (recently added)
  • Brookwood Subdivision (recently added)

A Red Cross shelter was available to evacuees starting on Sunday at 5 p.m. The shelter is located at the Polk County Middle School at 321 Wolverine Trail, Mill Spring, NC 28756. 

The Red Cross recommends anyone who comes to the shelter bring medication, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and comfort items. 

On Monday, Polk County announced the following road closures:

  • Howard Gap Road closed both ways between Page Far Road and Indian Mount Road
  • Holbert Cove Road closed both ways between Glen Echo Creek Circle and Silver Creek Road 
  • Restricted flow on Green Rover Cove Road both ways between Silver Creek Road and Holbert Cove Road
