Police: Man dies week after boxcar derby accident at White Squirrel Festival

BREVARD, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Brevard Police said a man has died days after an accident at the White Squirrel Festival.

During the boxcar derby event on May 27, police said one of the boxcars suddenly veered sharply right while going downhill and crashed into spectators. 

Four people were transported by EMS to Transylvania Regional Hospital and one person was airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville, officers said. 

The person was was airlifted to the hospital, 66-year-old Gary Kendrick of Brevard, passed away  on Saturday due to head trauma.

The 13-year-old boxcar driver was also treated for minor injuries at the scene. 

The Transylvania County School System, which helps staff the event with volunteers, said the course was checked by personnel and ready for use.

District superintendent Jeff McDaris said they were deeply saddened to hear of Kendrick's passing.
