GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

If you’re in your mid-forties, you might want to start thinking about scheduling a colorectal cancer screening, according new guidelines announced by the American Cancer Society.

They are recommending screenings at 45 years old instead of 50 years old, following some alarming research, showing colorectal cancer rates on the rise for those born in the 80’s and 90’s.

Dr. Cedrek McFadden is a physician with GHS.

“Over the past 25 years we've seen an overall decrease in the numbers of folks that are getting colorectal cancer and are dying from colorectal cancer, but we've not seen the same sort of decrease for folks under the age of 50," said McFadden. "In fact, some of the research shows there's been a 50% rise in those under the age of 50 with colorectal cancer, with at least half of those 45 - 49."

The American Cancer Society is now recommending the screening at 45 instead of 50-years-old, following some recent research showing colorectal cancer rates on the rise for younger adults.

So far the American Cancer Society is the only organization calling for the earlier screenings, but Dr. McFadden tells us survival rates are much higher if the cancer is detected early.

"If we find it in later stages, survival is less than 20%," McFadden explained. "This underscores the importance of finding polyps or finding earlier staged cancers so we can prevent death."

Dr. McFadden says if you have symptoms like bleeding, changes in bowel habits or abdominal pain, you should be screened right away, no matter your age.
