CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office said an Upstate mother is charged after a toddler was found walking by himself.

Deputies said they received a 911 calling saying a 2-year-old child had left a home on Jim's Town Road with two black dogs.

The sheriff's office deployed bloodhounds and requested air support. The toddler was found within an hour of the search, approximately half a mile away. He and the dogs were uninjured.

Sheriff Don Reynolds said a creek was located near the home and several ponds are in the area.

“It’s a miracle that this child was found without serious injury or worse," the sheriff said. "We all thank God this child was found in good health because this could have easily turned out much more tragic."

When deputies went to the child's house, they said they found animal feces in his room, exposed wiring and other safety hazards. The home wasn't locked and the boy's mother, 25-year-old Victoria Calhoun, was sleeping when he went missing, deputies said.

"It breaks my heart to find a child living in these conditions," Reynolds said. "Children can’t speak for themselves and don’t have a voice in these situations. This child didn’t ask to be put in this situation and shouldn’t have had to live under such horrendous conditions.”

Calhoun is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. The 2-year-old was taken into emergency protective custody.
