After days of rain across Western North Carolina, people are now dealing with the damage left behind.

April Sottile lives and works in Chimney Rock, and said her home and her store both flooded during the storm.

"In my house, I had a major leak in one of the rooms," Sottile said, "It came out from under the wall and I'm still mopping that up because it seems to be coming through readily."

Sottile owns April's Boutique, which sits along the Broad River.  "The water was so high and it was fast," Sottile said, "I've never seen it that high or that fast ever."

Sottile said the bottom floor of her business flooded, but she was able to clean up the water before much damage was done, but her house sustained more damage. "I probably won't file an claim with my store, but my house is a different story," Sottile said.

If you are in the same boat, a few tips from FEMA can help get the process started:

  • Contact your insurance agent.
  • Immediately file a claim.
  • Document the damage with pictures, videos and receipts.
  • If it's safe to get into your home, start cleaning up water to avoid getting mold.

Since North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency, those tips will also come into play when it comes to applying for federal assistance.

According to FEMA, flood insurance does not cover additional living expenses, like temporary housing for people who are displaced because of damage, but you could quality for FEMA assistance.
