GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Gaffney Police Department confirmed a convicted felon has been charged after a 4-year-old child was shot while inside a residence Saturday morning.

The call came in at 8:52 a.m. that the child was shot in the abdomen when a gun was accidentally discharged in the home located on Oakland Avenue.

The child was then transported by helicopter to Greenville for treatment. Relatives identified the victim as 4-year-old Tyjalen Stevenson of Shelby, North Carolina. He was visiting family when the shooting occurred.

Officers say a handgun was located and collected from inside the residence and is believed to be the weapon used.

According to investigators, the gun was brought into the home by Stacy Hugh Johnson, who is not allowed to own a firearm due to previous felony convictions. Police said during an interview, he admitted to putting the gun under a mattress in his bedroom of the home.

He was arrested and charge with unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has been released from the Cherokee County Detention Center on bond.

Police have not yet said who was in possession of the gun when the 4-year-old was shot.

The investigation is ongoing.
