HAYWOOD CO., NC (FOX Carolina) -

Fire officials said a man is now safe after a rescue operation in Haywood County on Saturday.

Officials with Pigeon Fire Department said they were finishing up the operation just before 6 p.m.

According to fire officials, three kayakers were stranded on an island in the middle of the river. One of the kayakers capsized before they were stranded.

The fire department said the water level was high due to recent rain and the current was too swift for the kayakers to get to the river bank.

Rescue crews were able to pull the kayakers across the the island safely.

One of the kayakers was taken to the hospital by EMS, fire officials said.
