SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Spartanburg Police Department said a man is in custody after trying to steal a truck and then crashing into a gas pump on Sunday.

Officers were called to reports of a carjacking at the Spinx station on Pine Street around 8:30 p.m.

According to police, a driver was inside the gas station buying a drink when he saw 41-year-old Charles Capleton get into his truck that was left running in the parking lot.

Officers said the victim ran outside and jumped in the window of the truck to try to get Capleton to stop. During the struggle, the truck crashed into another vehicle in the parking lot and a gas pump, knocking it over and sending fuel spilling out.

The victim was able to hold Capleton until police arrived. Officers said they smelled alcohol on the suspect.

He was arrested and charged with malicious injury to real property, malicious injury to personal property and grand larceny.
