Deputies: Greenwood Co. escaped inmate captured

GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenwood County Sheriff's Office said an inmate who escaped a jail in handcuffs on Friday has been captured. 

Deputies said 39-year-old Steven Ray Fendley escaped the Greenwood County Detention Center and fled on foot towards Oak Avenue. 

The sheriff's office said they received a tip that Fendley was spotted near Cambridge Avenue around 6:45 p.m. 

Deputies said Fendley resisted arrest and was tazed by an officer. He was taken into custody and transported to Self-Regional Healthcare, the sheriff's office said. After being cleared at the hospital, Fendley will be placed into the Greenwood County Detention Center. 

According to deputies, Fendley was still wearing the handcuffs, but had broken the chain and disguised the cuffs on his wrists. 

The sheriff's office said Fendley faces the following charges: 

  • 4 general sessions bench warrants from Greenwood County 
  • Resisting arrest, shoplifting, receiving stolen goods and grand larceny 
  • 2 general sessions bench warrants from the City of Greenwood 
  • 1 escape warrant from Greenwood County
