When a GHS Children's Hospital patient couldn't make it to her high school graduation ceremony, her own cap and gown ceremony came to her on Monday.

According to Greenville Health System, Tabitha Clayton was born with congenital brain abnormalities and medically-complex health needs that sometimes require hospitalization, but as of 1:30 p.m., that didn't stop her from graduating.

On the day of graduation, Tina Clayton, Tabitha's mother, said, "When she was born we found out that she had the cerebral palsy and she had the seizures. At one point we were told that she wouldn't live past age 3, so for her to reach her 18th birthday and be able to graduate is just mind blowing. Every year is a blessing. Every day is a blessing. We don't take anything for granted."

Tina was thrilled that Tabitha could have the graduation experience at hospital. "She didn't have a lot of normal childhood experiences growing up. This is something special we can do just for her," she said.

Tabitha attends McCarthy Teszler School in Spartanburg. Teszler provides services to students with disabilities from all seven school districts in Spartanburg Co. Tabitha's graduation diploma was presented by school principal, Teshia Hair.

Arun Singh, MD, medical director of GHS Children's Hospital pediatric supportive care said, "the medical staff at GHS Children's Hospital are honored and proud to be a small part of her big day."
