HENDERSON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Liz Lawter is getting ready for the next customer at the Bat Cave Apple House.

"It's been very slow," Lawter said."My mom and dad started it 30 years ago."

Lawter says right now it's slow even though it's supposed to be busy season.

"As soon as school lets out, it gets really busy," Lawter said."We sell vegetables when they come in. We sell jellies, jams, birdhouses and all kinds of different little knick knacks."

There's an occasional car that passes the roadside store, but recently very little foot traffic.

"They just go around- most of them have, but I hate that the road's closed to the people that live there," Lawter said.

A massive landslide shut-down North Carolina Highway 9 and forced detours for tourists and those who live in the area.

"It's a big inconvenience for them, it's a drive around about 50 minutes go back to Black Mountain and get on 1-40 to Asheville, then come down to 74A," Lawter said.

Ted Adams is a construction engineer with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

"The first order of business will be to get a road to the top," Adams said."There have been some trees that have fallen and some rocks."

So, he's surveying the area and so will contractors to figure out how to clean up the debris from a 300 foot slope.

"The way the slide moved, it's really no way to excavate it from the bottom it's just too big. So, we're going to have to build - construct a small road to get to the top,"Adams said.

Then they need to dump the debris.

"The fastest way to get rid of it is to use off-road trucks. They can haul a lot of material, so we've been looking at several sites," Adams said.

Once that's finished an open road could drive traffic to the Bat Cave Apple House.
